| บทคัดย่อโครงการ | Chlamydia is an important bacterial infectious disease in humans and various animals. Although Chlamydia-related outbreaks have been reported globally, data on its prevalence in zoo animals in Thailand remain limited. This study investigates the occurrence and genetic characteristics of Chlamydia strains in animals at Songkhla Zoo, focusing on potential cross species transmission. A total of 92 cloacal and anal swab samples were collected from mammals, birds, and reptiles and tested using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of 16s rRNA gene and Omp gene followed by Sanger sequencing. Among these, only one sample from a Giant Asian Pond Turtle (Heosemys grandis) tested positive for 16s rRNA gene, exhibiting a 98.9% sequence identity with Chlamydiales bacterium. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed its classification within the Chlamydiales order, distinct from Chlamydia psittaci and Chlamydia avium. While the overall prevalence (0.92%) was lower than in other studies, the presence of Chlamydiales in reptiles highlights the need for continued surveillance in zoo environments. These findings contribute to understanding Chlamydia diversity and underscore the importance of monitoring zoonotic pathogens to mitigate potential risks to animal and human health. |
